Opinion | Should Alcohol Labels Warn of Cancer Risks?
  + stars: | 2024-04-21 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “A Debate Over Cancer Warning Labels on Alcohol” (Science Times, April 9):This article does an admirable job of spotlighting efforts around the world to require cancer warnings on alcohol. In fact, similar efforts to improve alcohol labeling are gaining traction in the U.S.Just last month, U.S. regulators held listening sessions about including ingredients, nutritional information and allergen labeling on alcoholic beverages. And in 2020, a coalition of seven health advocacy groups petitioned the U.S. government to adopt a cancer warning label. U.S. law directs regulators to consult with the surgeon general and “promptly” report to Congress when the need for an amendment to alcohol warnings arises. But more than seven years have passed since the surgeon general proclaimed a link between alcohol and cancer with no action from the Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which regulates most alcohol products.

Opinion | Defining Professionalism Among Doctors and Nurses
  + stars: | 2024-03-27 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “How ‘Professionalism’ in the Medical World Can Be a Minefield” (Science Times, March 19):Doctors and nurses have answered a calling to care — specifically, in healing the sick. They don’t think about whether their off-duty attire meets traditional definitions of appropriateness, even though some people think that is what defines or constitutes “professionalism.”But larger questions remain. Hospital executives and medical staff leaders who invest in professionalism training will be rewarded with happier, healthier patients, and doctors and nurses who bring joy and love to their work. To the Editor:Re “A Drug User’s ‘Paradise’” (Science Times, Aug. 1):Portland, Ore., is not a drug user’s paradise. The citizens of Portland who voted in favor of Measure 110 understood this to be an approach that would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs and direct revenue from marijuana sales to fund drug treatment and recovery services. Drug treatment is not a “soft” option. It is a rigorous, structured process that addresses the underlying issues of a person’s addiction, including trauma, mental illness and medical concerns. When operated by trained staff, with the provision of medication-assisted treatment, primary health care services, and connections to jobs and housing, treatment is the most effective solution.

Over 2,000 dead penguins have washed up on the shores of Uruguay. The birds have tested negative for the avian flu, leaving experts guessing at causes of death. According to the Times, Magellanic penguins can be found across the Pacific and the Atlantic, with concentrations in the Falkland Islands, Chile, and Argentina. The Times added that they move north in colder temperatures to find warmer water and food. Tesore added that he found other dead animals on the beach, like seagulls and sea turtles.

And then there is the mental effort of focusing awareness on the breath while the mind serves up plans, memories and emotions, not all of them pleasant. “Leave your front door and your back door open,” the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki used to say. Back in the newsroom these days, I’m more able to take a beat amid the stress of breaking news. After the first day on the retreat in June, thoughts of work slipped out the back door. The week ahead would bring fresh headlines, many of misery — more wildfire smoke, contaminated strawberries and deadly tornadoes in the South.

The Titan tragedy joins the Byford Dolphin accident in history's most gruesome deep-sea incidents. It joins the Byford Dolphin accident of 1983 — another deep-sea chamber compression incident but with a very different set of circumstances that killed five and injured one. The Byford Dolphin incidentOn November 5, 1983, four divers — Edwin Coward, Roy Lucas, Bjørn Bergersen, and Truls Hellevik — returned from a deep-sea commercial mission near the Byford Dolphin oil rig. Graphic showing the layout of the living chambers and the diving bell where the Byford Dolphin accident happened. Unlike the divers near the Byford Dolphin oil rig, the Titan passengers didn't have any excess nitrogen in their blood.

Opinion | Rosalind Franklin and Unsung Women in Science
  + stars: | 2023-05-09 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Essay Extends Debate Over DNA Discovery” (Science Times, May 2):Determining the role that Rosalind Franklin played in the discovery of the structure of DNA remains a contentious issue. Lamentably, Dr. Franklin is often one of the few female scientists people can name as one who deserved more credit than she received during her lifetime. There are hundreds — if not thousands — of such unsung women throughout history. This has become increasingly evident to us as we work our way through our ever-increasing database of 250 deceased women of science. It might be true that today’s women are less likely to be shortchanged when it comes to receiving credit — and for that we are grateful.
